Can somebody give me a regular expression to do an approximate match between two words.

for example I have Mike Ross in one column and mross in another.

I am using DemandTools in salesforce and I tried using the following expressions:
[\w]*
[\w]{3,}?
[a-zA-Z]*
etc,

I think the space in my first column may be the problem. How can I avoid space?

I am new to this and any help would be appreciated.
